Planning a Visit to Aberdeen from Campus

Aberdeen sits on the western edge of Freetown, where the peninsula meets the Atlantic, while Fourah Bay College looks out over the city from Mount Aureol in the east. That means a trip to the beach usually involves crossing much of the city, and traffic on the main routes through central Freetown can be heavy, especially at weekday rush hours and on busy weekend afternoons. Many students travel in small groups and share a taxi or keke, agreeing the fare before setting off. Leaving early in the day gives you more time on the sand and a calmer journey back before dark.

Beach safety

The Atlantic along this coast can have strong waves and currents, and conditions change with the tide and the season. If you plan to swim, stay close to shore, avoid going in alone, and pay attention to local advice and any warning signs. The rainy season, which typically runs from around May to October, brings heavier surf and sudden downpours. The drier months are generally more comfortable for a beach day. Sun protection and plenty of drinking water are worth packing whatever the weather looks like.

Making the most of the area

Lumley Beach runs alongside Aberdeen and forms one long stretch of shoreline, so it is easy to walk between the two. The area tends to get livelier in the evenings and at weekends, when people come out to eat grilled fish, listen to music and watch the sunset over the ocean. For a quieter visit, go on a weekday morning. Keep valuables to a minimum, carry small notes for snacks and transport, and check opening times directly with any restaurant or hotel before you go, because hours can vary.
