Making the Most of Faculty Office Hours
Office hours are one of the most valuable and least used resources in university life. Many students only visit a lecturer when something has gone wrong, such as a missed assignment or a disappointing mark. Yet the most rewarding conversations usually happen earlier, when a question is still small and there is time to act on the advice you receive.
Preparing for a visit
A short, focused meeting is easier for everyone. Before you go, it helps to:
- Write down two or three specific questions rather than asking for a general review of the course.
- Bring your lecture notes, the assignment brief or a draft, so the lecturer can see exactly where you are stuck.
- Check the department notice board or your course outline first, since schedules can change during examination periods, public holidays and fieldwork seasons.
- Arrive on time and be ready to share the slot with other students on busy days.
Beyond coursework
Lecturers can offer more than help with a difficult topic. They can explain how modules connect across levels of study, suggest reading that goes beyond the syllabus, and advise on choosing a dissertation subject or a supervisor. For students thinking about postgraduate study, a lecturer who knows your work well is often the person best placed to write a reference, and that relationship is built over several conversations rather than one.
If you are curious about the work academics are doing in their own fields, ask them. Many departments welcome students who want to assist with data collection, literature reviews or community-based projects, and this kind of experience can shape your career choices. You can read more about current areas of enquiry on our Research page.
Communicating respectfully
Outside office hours, keep messages brief and polite, include your full name, programme and course code, and allow reasonable time for a reply. If you cannot attend during the listed times because of lectures or work commitments, it is usually acceptable to request an alternative appointment. Prospective students with questions about entry requirements rather than teaching should start with the Admissions information, and general enquiries can go through the Contact page.
