Getting More from the Fourah Bay College Alumni Community

Fourah Bay College, founded in 1827 and now a constituent college of the University of Sierra Leone, has one of the longest graduate traditions in West Africa. Its former students have gone on to work in education, law, medicine, public service, the church and business across Sierra Leone and well beyond. That long history is what makes an alumni network valuable: almost every field has someone who once walked the same paths on Mount Aureol and is willing to share advice.

Practical ways to stay connected

  • Keep your details current. If you move, change jobs or switch email addresses, update your record with the alumni office so invitations and newsletters reach you.
  • Join a regional or diaspora chapter. Many graduates live in other cities or abroad. Local groups often meet more frequently than the wider association and are a good way to build friendships.
  • Connect by year group or faculty. Classmates from the same department often stay in touch through informal groups, which can be the easiest route back into the community.
  • Verify before you share. Confirm event dates, fees and contribution channels through official college sources before you pay or pass on information.

Giving back without a large budget

Supporting the college does not always mean a financial gift. Alumni can mentor current students, give a guest talk to a department, offer internships or attachments, or help new graduates prepare for interviews. Sharing your experience of the application process can also help prospective students. Point them to the admissions guide and the overview of programmes on offer.

Returning to campus

Reunions and homecoming visits are a good chance to see how the college has changed. Before you travel, check the latest arrangements and plan your transport up the hill in advance. Our campus page gives background on the grounds and facilities you may want to revisit.
